Sundays at Mill Race Village

Signs of Summer

It must be summer; Mill Race Village is open for the season!  To the uninitiated, the historic Village is a nineteenth-century jewel in Northville’s crown.  Seven buildings, ranging from approximately 1831 to the 1890’s, have carefully been moved from various parts of Northville to the scenic park land on Griswold Street; two more have been meticulously re-constructed with the aid of period photographs and plans.  A tenth structure, the 1850’s General Store, is being re-assembled in the Village, having been moved board-by-board from its original Main Street location.

Each Sunday afternoon, from mid-June to mid-October, the buildings are open for public viewing.  Costumed docents are on hand to inform visitors about the buildings, their contents, and about Northville’s past.  Many weekends, a working blacksmith demonstrates the craft, weavers and rug hookers ply their trades, and an occasional strolling musician may be found.  Special events are planned for July 4th and the Victorian Festival.

A visit to the Village is a delightful way to explore the past, take a pleasant stroll, and step back in time.  Mill Race Village is open to all, and there is no admission charge.  It’s located on Griswold, just east of downtown Northville, between Main Street and Eight Mile Road.  The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset; the buildings are open on Sunday afternoons from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

20th Annual Victorian Festival

Journey back through time to a simpler era with a visit to downtown Northville's 20th annual Victorian Festival. Experience the art, history, and romance of the 1800's amid Northville's historic downtown district and tree-lined streets.

The Festival begins with the traditional parade on Friday at 6:30pm and continues throughout the weekend.  The streets will be closed to automobile traffic as townspeople, artists, and business owners turn back the clock and transform themselves into a Victorian Village complete with period costumes, free trackless train and horse and carriage rides, storytellers, magicians, musical entertainment and demonstrations. Ryde Park features rides for kids and the Victorian Saloon (sponsored by Edward Jones) offers entertainment for adults.

Visitors can also enjoy a unique shopping experience in the many establishments in Northville, old-fashioned games, and food booths. Victorian Teas and Fashion Shows take place on Saturday and Northville's own historical village, Mill Race Village, will host activities on Saturday and Sunday as well.

The Festival is hosted by the Northville Chamber of Commerce and celebrates the town's special heritage. Founded in the early 1800's, Northville came of age during the Victorian period and the community retains that flavor of the period today.

We will be adding two new sections to the Victorian Festival - Crafts and Demonstrations.

American Association of University Women Northville-Novi Home Tour

Presented by the Northville-Novi American Association of University Women (AAUW), this year’s Home Tour features four residential homes and one commercial business (artist’s loft located on the third floor of downtown building). All locations are within walking distance of downtown Northville.  Also, this year’s theme is “Downtown Northville:  Timeless with a Twist” which coincides with The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) marketing campaign slogan launched last year.  The “twist” focuses on the fact that Northville is a Victorian town settled with land grants from John Quincy Adams in 1825 and 1826, however, today, even though the town’s Victorian homes still stand, the turn of the 21st century has ushered in diverse life styles of living as well as a new era of business accommodations.

Macy’s “Shop for the Cause” Benefits Mill Race Village

The name is simple; the idea is simple.  In Macy’s “Shop for the Cause” program, shoppers buy a $5 shopping pass (Mill Race Village keeps all the proceeds) then take their passes to Macy’s Twelve Oaks on Saturday, September 20.  On that day only, savings of 10% to 20% are offered on most merchandise in the store—even that already on sale.  Ten percent (10%) can be deducted from furniture and mattresses; 20% can be taken off a wide variety of clothing, accessories, and home goods.  On that same day, Macy’s offers entertainment, special events, and a chance to win a $500 Macy’s shopping spree.  And Mill Race Village benefits from the ticket sales.

(Some items must be excluded; the “fine print” is available at point of ticket purchase or on the ticket itself.)

Tickets are available at:

  • Mill Race Village Office, 215 Griswold Street, weekdays 9:00am to 1:00pm
  • Mill Race Village Store, 215 Griswold Street, Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00pm
  • Northville Candle & Gifts, 124 North Center Street, during regular business hours

What could be an easier way to have fun—and raise money for one of our local treasures?  For more information, call The Northville Historical Society, 248-348-1845.
