Appeal Processes

For your convenience, we've consolidated appeal processes into one page.  If you cannot find the information you are looking for here, please contact Finance Director/Assistant City Manager Nicolette Bateson.

Board of Zoning Appeals

Read about how to appear before the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and Historic District Commission in the Government section of our website.

The function of the Board of Zoning Appeals is to act on those matters where the City Ordinance provides for an administrative review, interpretation, exception or special land use approval and to authorize a variance as defined per city ordinance and the laws of the State of Michigan. The Board of Zoning Appeals does not have the power to alter or change the zoning district classification of any property, nor to make any change in the terms of the ordinance.

More information on the Board of Zoning Appeals is available in the Government section of our website.

Housing Board of Appeals

In order that the provisions of this article may be reasonably applied and substantial justice done in instances where unnecessary hardship would result from carrying out the strict letter of this article, a housing board of appeals is hereby created. The duty of the board of appeals shall be to consider appeals from the decision of the officials charged with the enforcement of this article and to determine in particular cases whether any deviations from the strict enforcement of the article will violate the intent of the article and jeopardize public health and safety.  Click on the link below to print a Housing Board of Appeals Application.

Michigan Construction Board of Appeals

An application for appeal shall be based on a claim that the true intent of this code or the rules legally adopted thereunder have been incorrectly interpreted, the provisions of this code do not fully apply, or an equally good or better form of construction is proposed.  The board shall have no authority to waive requirements of this code.  Click on the link below to print a Michigan Construction Board of Appeals Application.
